Fives & Heronians 4th XI v Stanford-Le-Hope Cricket Club Saturday 3rd XI on Sat 18 Aug 2012 at 13:00
Stanford-Le-Hope Cricket Club Won by 5 runs
Match report
Stanford took five wickets for 12 runs in the last six overs of the match to win a closely contested game against Fives and Heronians. The game had looked over when Fives reached 185-5, chasing 203 to win and with 6 overs remaining. However, spin twins Jack Carter and Steve Trigg had other ideas as they ripped through the middle and lower order, dismissing Fives for 197 with the second ball of the last over. Earlier Stanford's 202 was based around good scores for Geoff Lake (39) and Lewis Robinson (57), who put on 94 for the first wicket, Stanford's highest opening partnership of the season. Despite the loss of 4 wickets for the next 14 runs, Mark Knight (61) steadied the ship, allowing others to bat around him and allow Stanford to post a competitive total of 202 on a track that looked good for batting. The total looked to be more than enough as Fives slumped to 17-3 against some high class opening bowling from Matthew Drain and Colin Knight. However, Fives middle order had other ideas and took the game to the fast men and with runs flowing Stanford had to introduce spin from both ends to try and quell the run rate. Although the rate of scoring slowed, wickets failed to materialise as several chances went begging. Just as the game looked over Matthew Drain took a smart catch to dismiss Fives Captain and top scorer Bukhari for 68 and the rest of the batting line up could not cope with Steve Trigg's sliders as he finished with 5 for 41, his second 5 wicket haul of the season. Going into the last over Fives needed 6 runs to win and Stanford 1 wicket. Captain, Neil Fuller kept faith with youngster Jack Carter, bowling his leg spin. After a dot ball, he tossed one up which the batsman missed before being smartly stumped by Craig Ashley to win the game. Stanford are now 4 points behind Wickford in 2nd place with 3 games of the season remaining.
