Welcome back to the cricket season, the one where dreams are born, hopes are crushed, and at least one player will claim it pitched outside leg when given plumb LBW.

It’s been a while, but The Scout has returned from hibernation to guide you through another season of Fantasy League madness.

But before we begin, there’s one crucial question:

Have you entered a team yet?

We’re only four teams short of the magic 40. Ask your mum. Ask your nan. Ask your postman. Ask the neighbour who once walked past the Rec and said “ooh, cricket”. If they say “but I don’t know anything about cricket”, tell them:

“The Scout will assist — get involved.”

So, strap in. Grab some popcorn. Maybe a glass of fizz, cos’ here come some of the runners and riders…

🟥 1XI – New Season, New Hope

Optimism is high — suspiciously high — as the 1XI kick off at home against Leigh on Sea.

Stalwarts Martin Leslie and Rob Page, who have moved onto pastures new. But fear not: new signing Alan Ison (8m) has arrived, fresh from Sawbridgeworth and ready to unleash like a coiled spring. As are the very talented Robinson brothers, Harry (7m) and Freddie (7m). They continue their rapid rise up the ranks, captain picks maybe?

Jack Carter (6.5m) takes the armband, with Thomas Willats (5m) as his loyal deputy, emotional support human, occasional voice of reason and someone to help him put the teas out.

On paper, they look strong. On grass… well, we’ll find out.

Player to watch: Jack Scutt (5m) — sliding into the opening spot effortlessly
Scout verdict: A great chance to start the season with a bang.

 

🟦 2XI – The Road Warriors

The 2XI head to Aztecs with a squad that screams “experience meets youth meets a brand-new kit”.

Chay Hedges (4m) leads the charge, armed with Daryl Woodford (6.5m) and Ash Downs (5.5m) — a bowling duo capable of taking wickets, breaking stumps, or accidentally hitting the square-leg umpire (ooh that's harsh!).

With the bat, Matt Lewis (6m) and Rama Bashamoni (5.5m) will try to put runs on the board rather than polite singles. Should be fun to watch.

Bobby Kenyon (5m) steps up to the 2s, and Luke Radcliffe (4.5m) returns after a decade away — presumably after finally finding the box he left behind.

Player to watch: Joe Robertson (5m) — big season incoming.
Scout verdict: On the road… could be to victory. 

 

🟩 3XI – The Reprieve Redemption Tour

The 3XI travel to Old Parks under new skipper Freddie Hales (6.5m), who now holds the reins, and the responsibility of explaining Duckworth‑Lewis to confused teammates – that will be everyone then, let's prey for no rain.

Fresh call‑ups as Shan Selveraj (7.5m) and Tharun Shanmuganand (6m) bring firepower after big seasons in the 4s, one with the bat and one with the ball.

Add in the unpredictable brilliance of Deepak Kumar (5m) and Vivek Khanna (4m) and you’ve got a team capable of anything.

Player to watch: Sam Stannard (6.5m) — rising faster than club bar prices.
Scout verdict: Wise heads needed to guide the youth. Preferably ones that can drive.

 

🟨 4XI – The Second Square Rumble

Back on the second square, the 4XI face old friends Leigh on Sea.

Adam Pickett (5.5m) returns to the captain’s table — ably supported by the Geoff twins — Lake (5.5m) and Gullet (4.5m). Debutants:  Zach Partridge (2m) and Avanish Patil (2m) bring youthful energy and the ability to sprint and chase without moaning, a vital quality in the 4XI, go well lads.

Player to watch: Jay Placey (3.5m) — back at The Rec after a season away.
Scout verdict: A strong start needed. Preferably one that doesn’t involve losing the toss.

 

🟧 5XI – The Fantasy League Debut

For the first time ever, the 5XI count for Fantasy points. Yes. Really. History is being made. Statisticians are panicking. The Play Cricket admin guys are hoping it’s all scored online.

Graham Long (2.5m) captains, with Keith Wilson (2.5m) beside him — a duo with more combined experience than the rest of the 5XI. Add in Freddy Long (3m) and Max Wilson (3m) and it’s basically a family WhatsApp group with pads on.

Zee Ali (3m) brings middle‑order experience and the ability to say “yes” with authority.

Player to watch: A. N Other (?m) — mysterious. Unknown potential.
 Scout verdict: More games, more experience, more exposure.

 

🏆 Final Word from The Scout

That’s your Week 1 preview — the names, the values, the hype plus a bit more all free of charge.

You’ve got £55m to build your squad. Spend it wisely. Or recklessly. Either way, pick a captain who won’t get a golden duck.

There’s still time to enter a team and unlimited transfers until 11am Saturday. We need a few more — don’t make me start recruiting dog walkers from the Rec.
