Match report Stanford had the better of a draw against Fives & Heronians on Saturday. Having won the toss and chosen to bat in wild and windy conditions Stanford batted sensibly for the first 30 overs and reached 89-3 with contributions from Lewis Robinson (31) and Geoff Lake (26). This set a platform for the middle and lower order to come in and play their shots against a tiring attack. Rob Pearn (64*) and keeper Phil Anderson (46) did just that, putting on 83 in just 10 overs. However when Anderson fell at 192-5 a mini collapse occurred as opening bowler Shahrukh Irfan returned to pick up 5-50, including a hat trick. However, Andy Freeman, batting up the order at 10 ensured Stanford reached maximum batting points and could declare their innings on 213-8. After the break, Stanford set about their task well with Colin Knight (0-14 off 11 overs) bowling unplayable ball after unplayable ball. Other opening bowler, Matthew Drain (3-31 off 12 overs) bowled with great pace and great accuracy, attacking the stumps and the pads of the Fives batsmen. It was undoubtably the best spell of his season so far. After losing their dangerous opening batsman early, Fives showed no interest in attempting the win and instead looked to bat out their overs. Despite attacking fields and numerous bowling changes Stanford could not force the win as Fives’ innings closed on a disappointing 129-6 with Steve Trigg (3-40 off 10 overs) taking the other wickets to fall.
